My PhD project focusses on alexithymia, a personality trait characterized by difficulty in identifying and verbalizing feelings and in the cognitive regulation of emotions. The project aims to shed light on the neural substrates of alexithymia using the neuroimaging techniques EEG, fMRI and TMS in combination with behavioral measures. We aim to show that alexithymia is associated with abnormalities in the cognitive processing of emotions, with dysfunctional mechanisms in the limbic system, and with an impaired interaction between limbic structures and cortical structures mediating the cognitive regulation of emotional stimuli.
